"He has a top attitude and is a player who wants to develop in all areas - both on and off the pitch - with great focus on the details." – Francesco Farioli

Overview

Victor Froholdt is currently standing out for his performance levels at FC Porto in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, recently winning the league under Italian coach Francesco Farioli. The trust placed in Froholdt by Farioli (31 starts from 32 games) is testament to his contributions to the team, the maturity he plays the game with along with his outstanding physical performance.

What stands out about Victor Froholdt on first viewing is his ability to be effective in all moments of the game. As an '8' he has the athleticism and desire to get into the opponent's box in the offensive moments as well as the maturity and responsibility to recover into defensive shape upon transition. Without the ball, Froholdt is incredibly diligent for such a young age and his long strides enable him to “jump” press opponents with an outstanding regularity and intensity.

Within this piece we will delve deeper into Froholdt’s outstanding attributes that are attracting the world’s elite clubs and examine which areas of his game he will be working on to develop should a move to one of the major European leagues materialise.

Technical

Victor Froholdt's technical profile: the midfielder is able to receive and manipulate the ball with both feet

As a midfield '8', Froholdt’s all round technical game is impressive. He is able to receive and manipulate the ball effectively with both feet, demonstrated by his 2.77 receives between lines p90 compared with a league average of 1.61. Credit must also be given to the clarity that Farioli has given the team collectively as this clarity, in terms of structure and responsibilities, has enabled Froholdt to make the effective decisions and carry out these technical actions with excellent efficiency when building from deep, progressing the play and in the final third also.

It’s within the final third that Froholdt has accumulated some impressive numbers where he has 11 goal contributions in his 32 league games to date. Within these contributions he demonstrates his goal threat off either side (3 right, 2 left, 1 head), making it hard for defenders to show him anyone one way in these offensive situations. He is able to travel incredibly well with the ball and the sight of Froholdt showing his running power from midfield when his team have progressed to the final third is extremely impressive. His physicality (more on that shortly) enables him to make the box and contribute to the team again creating numerical superiority in these situations.

To constructively critique Froholdt through the eyes of his technical data, he shows a below average passes per game p90 for the Premeira Liga (22.79 v 34.06). This seems low for a team that dominates possession in their domestic fixtures, and whilst this could be an area for improvement if Froholdt were to develop to capability to play as a pivot 6 and build his team's attacks, it could be argued that this deeper start position could nullify his super-strength of arriving in the box.

However, one area of improvement we do feel after observing Froholdt several times in matches and through his data is his ability to play forward on transition. His progression after recovery p90 is below league average (1.3 v 1.57) and we feel that with his ability to run beyond opponents, to play that first pass forward on transition can give Froholdt a real advantage to join is fast attacks with his teammates.

Tactical

One thing that immediately stands out when observing Froholdt is his tactical maturity and diligence out of possession. On transition, if he isn’t in a position to win the ball back quickly, he consistently shows good speed in recovering into a defensive position. He shows an understanding of when to track midfield runners and when to communicate effectively and pass these runners on. He shows clear understanding of pressing triggers and cues and looks to be very well timed in his decisions of when to jump press. From observation, we feel Froholdt could comfortably operate as an extra forward should his coach wish to use him higher up in the press should they only be playing with one centre forward. Equally, his mobility could be equally effective from a deeper position when teams look to play through central areas.

Victor Froholdt offers a huge amount to his team out of possession

Again, his out of possession performance data demonstrates this with above league average pressures on the ball possessor, ball recoveries and interceptions. Credit must go to Froholdt, but also to his coaches who have developed a well-rounded individual but also someone who shows real clarity and a high level of tactical understanding in his roles and responsibilities without the ball.

One constructive criticism we could offer, particularly should Froholdt transfer to a league where there may be more direct aerial play (either through open play or set pieces), is his defensive aerial duels won. With him standing at 6’2, these numbers could and should be improved to further round off what is an already impressive game.

Physical

Froholdt’s physical performance is incredible. Not only does he produce these incredible numbers and incredible intensity in the big games, he is able to recover and do this over and over again.

Froholdt's physical output is consistently excellent

Froholdt is able to produce an impressive average total distance p90 of 11,557m and what makes this even more impressive is this calculated from a total of 2951mins. As the table above shows, within the top 6 TD averages for not just midfielders but all players in the Primeira Liga, the nearest opponent in terms of minutes played is at merely 1367. Staggeringly, Froholdt has accumulated more than double this yet is able to suggest that fatigue is nothing but a myth!

Froholdt's physical output is consistently excellent

What’s even more outstanding is Froholdt’s ability to produce the high intensity moments on an alarming regularity. Again, the table above illustrates Froholdt’s superiority in not only producing these numbers, but his incredible ability to repeat them. No one comes close to him in terms of minutes played, yet where most individuals may accumulate fatigue, Froholdt is able to reproduce these incredible physical performances with outrageous regularity and on a tactical level, this athleticism enables the team to develop the numerical superiority Farioli’s system demands in all moments of the game.

For reference, using Kognia data and comparison tools, we have compared the physical performance of Victor Froholdt with Real Madrid’s Fede Valverde, another midfielder renowned for his physical ability. The graph speaks for itself!

Froholdt has a physical profile that compares comparably against similar players such as Real Madrid's Fede Valverde

As already discussed, Victor Froholdt is an intelligent footballer. When in possession he has contributed greatly to the teams offensive performance and out of possession he shows a tactical maturity beyond his years. This physical performance in isolation is impressive from an athletic viewpoint, but when allied with football IQ, all the signs suggest Froholdt would be able to cope with the physical demands of higher intensity leagues and for a club that would be competing across several competitions.

Psychological

Froholdt is a winner. At the young age of 20 he has already won the 25/26 Portuguese Premeira Liga and the 24/25 Danish Superliga and this experience of winning is what all elite level teams desire. Despite his young age, Froholdt started 30/32 Danish Superliga games and to date, 31/32 Portuguese Premeira Liga games also. He can be relied upon and he consistently shows the psychological robustness to perform at such a level, all key attributes to elite level teams.

Individual Development Plan

When designing Individual Development Plans, I believe they should comprise of three strands. Firstly, what does the team demand of that position? This is difficult for us as coaches to discuss from an external standpoint. Francesco Farioli has clearly delivered and articulated to Victor Froholdt exactly what is required of him in and out of possession and this foundation has given Froholdt a base to go out and perform so spectacularly.

Secondly, and on top of this understanding, what are the individuals key attributes and how can we build on them. Froholdt should continue to commit to using his athleticism in the final third when breaking from midfield which will enable him to keep producing such impressive goal contributions from midfield. Outstanding metrics of his such as the following should continue to be monitored to ensure he is delivering on his super strengths:

Metric

Description

Third man support

Detects "third man" passing combinations, identifying the two players receiving the ball

Receive between the lines

Detects passes received in the space between the opposition midfield and defensive lines

Running into the box

Tactic that describes the movements of offensive players without the ball who make runs starting in front of the defensive line outside of the box and end inside the box overcoming the line

Striker support

Tactic that illustrates the behaviour of teammates giving support to a striker after they receive/possess the ball under pressure

And finally, what development points could stop a player from progressing to the levels their talents can achieve. In Victor Froholdt’s case this is very simple. Can he look to play forward quicker on transition, can he improve his aerial defensive duel reliability, and can he keep improving the real stats that matter, his already impressive goal contributions (particularly against a better level of defensive organisation and goalkeeper than he’s come up against in Denmark and Portugal to date).

Metric

Description

Progression after recovery

Common team behaviour is to move fast and forward from the area that the ball was recovered through the rest of the field using short-mid range passes

Passes

The attempted delivery of the ball from one player to another

Summary

Victor Froholdt is displaying all the attributes to be able to successfully transition to one of Europe’s top 5 leagues. We haven’t used his performances in the UEFA Europa League for this report, but to sum up Froholdt and all his attributes in one passage of play, it’s very important to mention his goal against Stuttgart in the Europa League knock out stages.

When the move begins, Froholdt is in his own half and shows the running power to join in the attack on the edge of the opponent's box quicker than anyone else on the pitch. He lands on the first loose ball and drives past an opponent. As he’s about to shoot he’s disposed but his reaction to this is elite and he wins the ball back on the edge of the box within seconds. After quickly shifting the ball and beating another opponent, Froholdt drives the ball on his weaker left foot into the top corner with spectacular power and accuracy to seal the result for Porto (cue Farioli’s impressed reaction caught by the camera).

Should the reported £80m release clause be met, the challenge for Froholdt should he transfer will be the increased demands on him technically and tactically through both playing level but also volume of games. In saying that, his physical prowess is well suited to the Premier League (in particular a team that values fast transitions to attack) and from what we’ve seen, as a player where there is still so much more development to come, we feel he’d certainly be able to hit the ground running and become an asset to teams challenging for titles and Champions League places.
